If you lived in the Birmingham/ Pelham area in the eighties, you might remember the Hungry Fisherman. This old billboard on Hwy 43 is all that is left of it.
hey. I do. Lime soft serve sherbet and a big catfish pond. PreGalleria...They don't have places like that anymore. Cool find. I recently made a stencil of that logo for T-shirts.
I remember it I used to work there! It was my second job when I was in high school. Whenever I drive by I still look over at the place where it used to stand. There's an office complex now where the restaurant and the man-made fish pond they had used to be. It was a cool place and I had loads of fun working there when I was 16-17. :)
I remember that place!! They also had paddle boats you could rent to paddle across the pond. I was quite young, so my memory is a bit vague but I clearly remember eating the parsley garnish on everyone's plates. Lol!!!
It was that road sign near the narrows that made me want to try the place. My first time there was 40 years ago today, November 11, 1977. I went to the Doobie Brothers concert that night.
Wow. This is sad. I remember my daddy would take mom and I here for dinner...all the way from down in Sylacauga. Daddy has passed away, so seeing the pic of the old billboard really makes my stomach sink. I wish I could be there just one more time with daddy. So long ago.
I was going through old pictures and came across one I took when we lived in Birmingham. The 1st time we went to the Hungry Fisherman was with my father-in-law. As we approached the restaurant he stopped us all in our tracks, pointed up at the front of the restaurant and said "I made that". Mounted above the entrance to the restaurant was a Tiller and Rudder off of a boat. Turns out the Tiller and Rudder were off of his old boat named SAM he had in Mobile. He had to replace the Tiller and Rudder on SAM and as was his way - he hand made the replacement Tiller / Rudder in his shop about 15 years before seeing it mounted on the front of the restaurant. The Manager confirmed it had come from a boat savage yard down around Mobile. Not sure where it is now but, there's a pretty good shot it's somewhere - he made things to last!

I loved that place! Right on the corner of Riverchase Parkway. You could buy catfish food from a gumball type machine and feed them from the pier.

ReplyDeleteGood hushpuppies. I used to have to waste some hushpuppie material on feeding the fish off the balcony, though. They needed some hushpuppie too.
